Well, actually, just a bunch of forum misfits.

But, having been away for a short time, it still impressed me, this one fact: 1979, 1978, and a few others get quite the number of mentions hereabouts. My 68? Well, if we eliminated CLIFF, CPW, GoP, and Arb, I doubt that we would know it existed. Not that this means squat.

But, here is my question, if you don't mind...Having recently celebrated "one year" at the forum, I am curious:

When did you "join" and what is your favorite year?

WT: Nov, 06; 1968

brother tell,

this place and the folks that gather here still mean a lot to me.

Hi WT, I'm often a bit late for threads being on the other side here, so I wonder if you will read this being so far down on the thread list now.

Lurking from about 4/06, first post 9/06, first show 72, first album Live Dead or Vintage Dead (69 or 70), favourite year 77, but enjoying many others, too, of course (I have to admit that I still didn't really come to appreciate 68 as much as you do), thanks for a good post!

Also, I enjoyed reading your little story, Jerkwaterdan, about that time - my first show was in 70 - John Mayall and then Fleetwood Mac (w. Peter Green, totally different group at that time, if you might think of them in the later 70s when P.G. had left), and they were friends with the Dead, too!

The Live at the Boston Tea Party CDs have some great jamming rock tunes from Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac in 1970, that show how heavily influenced he was by the Grateful Dead. If only he hadn't gone nuts & quit that year....there was so much potential there.
Still, as he was sputtering out, he did an interesting "fusion" instrumental album called End of the Game which I think is quite nice.

My introduction to the 'real' Dead came when accidentally exposed to the Dark Star from Two from the Vault; minutes later, I was off to buy every Dead live album there was.
My favorite year might remain 1968, were it not for the giant gorilla of 1970.

April '70: I'll always wonder if the Fillmore West run was the equal of the great Fillmore East run that June. And will always wonder why tapes of April 10 & 11 have never surfaced, since the whole run was probably taped. Playing after Miles Davis at those Fillmore West shows must've made them feel pretty small.
(It also sucks that a complete audience tape wasn't made of the August 17 Fillmore West show, since the next two nights were both caught probably by the same taper. And it REALLY sucks about Bear going to jail that year.)

Hey Light--go 68! That is amazing that is was TftV that got you going...one of my fav's, that really got me back to the boys, and esp the early stuff too. In fact, it was that purchase that led me to the web looking for more, realizing it was out there (either downloading from the store or...?).

hey light into ashes...

I was at the April 10th (or 11th) 1970 FW show. That was my first live GD show.

Also saw the August 17th, 1970 show.

I hope somehow, someday more of those sweet shows turn up.

I know there was at least one audience taper (the guy that caught my ear with the 1st live GD tape I ever heard) at those shows, at least one of them.

He used a mono Craig or Panasonic deck, not super hi-tech but he was a regular audience taper of GD shows in 1970.

That one tape I did hear around March 1970 (of Saint Stephen >) was pretty good sounding actually.

Or else I never would have become interested in seeing the GD play live to begin with, not in April 1970 at any rate.

Garcia and Miles Davis hit it off back stage, and from what I've heard, Miles wasn't into making frends with or showing interest in the hippie rock bands.

But he had real respect for Jerry's playing, apparently as a result of hearing the GD perform at one or more of those FW shows.

Hey Swamp--from the lurker post I think I recall you saying that you mostly lurk...so, do you mean you have been coming here for three years, but only recently started posting? That is great--you must have a sense of it having changed dramatically without having been "involved" in a direct sort of way...if you don't mind me asking, do you find it more interesting or much less so? My thought being that prior to the fall of 06 it seemed much "slower" (ie, total posting activity) but of course more focused on the music...

I find it a bit less interesting for obvious reasons. I used to come here for advice about which show to download from the archive next. I guess I still do the same - it just takes a bit more searching. And yes I have been a lurker for years before suddenly getting the urge to post. I may slink back into obscurity at any minute - who knows? As long as the music continues to flow I'll be back though.

Hey Mr Sir William Tell . . .

Joined in 79, first show was either Cape Cod or Nassau Col

Found the archive & forum last June/July, hadn't listened to much GD for about . . . a long time. Then heard that cranking Bertha from Skull F*ck on the FM and it's been all down hill . . . I think my wife is getting ready to stage an intervention; she did tip me off to the free Phil tickets from her sister though so there is still hope.

Almost forgot: Favorite year - don't know yet!!!

First GD album ever purchased: Steal Your Face . . . still one of my favorites no matter what anyone says.

First Dead show April '70 Cincy. Been checking out the forum off and on for a year. Favorite year(s) in my collection: 68,69,70,72,73,74,77,and 78 for sheer number of shows for a given year, though all years are represented. 1972 is probably number 1 followed by 1969.

It blew me away then and still does. My first concert ever was seeing Steppenwolf the previous year. My best friends sister was a "hippie" and her boyfriend (also a freak) and her were stuck with us then and they had to take us with them to see the Dead. They told us this was the real deal, not some top 40 pop band. I was really into all types of music then but the Dead were in a class of their own. The people who came to their shows looked like such freaks, the type of people you didn't normally see at that time. Just like they were dropped off from some place that wasn't on any map. The Dead played an acoustic show and I just thought that was what they always did! Ha! Jerry didn't even have a beard at that time. I saw the first Candyman ever played at that show! Here is a link to it:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd70-04-03.sbd.cotsman.4283.sbefail.shnf
I just checked out this show again and realize how lucky I was. First Candyman, first Friend Of The Devil, Katie Mae, Cosmic Charlie. Not bad for a first show!

".. Mama mama many worlds I've come since I first left home."

Hey Billy T.,

I joined the Forum about 2 years ago. Joined the Dead on May 4, 1979 at Hampton.

Favorite year has changed recently because of you and GoP. I am now a regular in 69, 79 and 71 and am loving it. After those years would come 1979, 1981.

Nice post.

Sir William, I have been here less than a year. Joined in Jan. '07. Have vascillated between lurker and poster since. I don't have one year that I would call "favorite". I am not listening to nearly as much Dead as I used to. When I do listen, I find myself randomly listening to shows from '66 to '95.

I saw my first show on 7.6.1986.
First started downloading from the Archive in 2004, but probably didn't start posting until 2005 or so.
Favorite years... 1973 and 1974.

By the way, just yesterday I got home from the hospital after my second hip replacement. The first was in July and the second was last Friday. Loaded the seocnd set jams from 11.10 & 11.11.1973 on to my MP3 player for the hospital stay. The music was as soothing as the morphine pump...

This has been a tough year, but I think it will all be worth it. My right hip, which was done in July, is stronger (and with a better range of motion:-) than it has been in three or four years. If the left improves as much, then I'll be good to go come springtime. The docs say it will take about 12 months to fully recover, but I can already tell a big difference.

It was kind of relaxing the other morning... Laying in the hospital bed at 4:00am with that PITB>UJB>Dew>UJB>PITB echoing in my head. Made the pain in my hip seem really far away. Better than any drug they could give me.
